Crowbars and Sour Cream

I ussually dont know where to put posts like these, look should they belong in KuwaitBlogs.com, here or just not post them at all. So figure just put it here.

Been working on Safatoo so that we can have a complete switch from Safat. Yet been facing some crazy weird upgrade issues with Safatoo with the MySQL stuff and it has been really annoying. Some of you may have noticed some issues with it on Wed.

It is really tough finding a good web based aggregator that just places stuff on a page based on time. Most are oriented for personal aggregators and have their own system. I been using Drupal as the base for Safat and really it is the best I’ve seen, complicated and annoying at times but it is a work horse.

Hopefully I plan to get some hack working for Safatoo “soon” so that I can do some more upgrades on it and have it stable. One issue we been having is the update problem it just doesn’t do it. That is one of the reasons I removed that shiny /aggregator/ look and have it more ugly looking on the address bar. I think that solved the problem but still need to do an upgrade.

One thing I been thinking about is that Drupal has some great features in it and I just use one, the aggregator. So been thinking of using some more. Like creating a Kuwait Blogs forum in it as well as giving users a personal space for things.

I have been bouncing the idea via some friends and not getting a real positive response. Also is it something that I want to focus on, and that is it part of the core competencies of Kuwait Blogs? Some of you may have tested my chat server for Kuwait Blogs. It was an interesting experiment but I really didn’t find it viable for people cause then you’d have people chatting and not blogging. As well as if people want to chat with each other they figure out how to do it via MSN mass chats and just meeting each other.

There are some other things I need to free up some time on and dedicate a good couple hours to set it up. One is moving from MT to WP Yet I plan to do that after the Safatoo->Safat thing and readd the blogs on the blog roll from Safatoo’s list since that is the newly update and authenticated list.

There some other stuff that I am thinking about working on, doing some research on it and playing with it in my brain. This one is more for Arab community more than the Kuwait one.

So there it a quick synopsis on what I been working on and what I am planning. Any insights of suggestion I am up for. Also a big thanks to my Safatoo Goddesses for adding the blogs on there and dealing all those add blog requests. I dont know what I would have done with out you guys.

Just some thoughts on the recent stock fall that we been having

  • The 200kd that was given over a year ago, prothesis
the multiplier effect has worn off
  • Restructuring of the consumer loans in Kuwait

There are other thoughts, but it requires the use of charts of graphs. So gather among yourselves and discuss these concepts.

A Hot Tipper

I just saw this amusing piece called Six Signs It’s a Scam on Motley Fool. It lists simple things to pay attention to when purchasing an investment.

The thing that I enjoyed when reading it is comparing it to the Kuwait Stock Market.

The ones that really caught my eye were number 3 and 6.

3. Predictions of the future. “It will double in three months.”

6. A “hot inside tip.”

How many times have we heard that in the diwaniya when mentioning a stock. Even the funny part is they say it will double in a week.

Cause then if you are doing something based on those ideas are you investing or gambling?

Well in Lebanon the plane trip was annoying. It has been a while since I flown Kuwait Airways and remembered why after this. Luckily I am returning via MEA so will avoid this mess.

Strange thing about this trip I am not brining my MP3 player. I was contimplating it when I was packing and decided against it. Not sure what to put on it and really didn’t think I will be listening to it at all.

Books:

  • Jennifer Government: Pretty cool book, here reminds me of Snow Crash but has this tinge to it that I am enjoying.
  • Counter-BlastI got this at the last second McLauhan is a visionary in terms of ways of communication where it is headed. I been thinking a lot of the future of communication and interaction lately ao wanted to catch up on his writings to get a better perspective of it all.
  • Vintage Maurakami I got this book ages ago but just haven’t had time to start reading it, buy or will start the first page and just put it down. I started reading one of the stories on the plane and really dove deep in his writings. Their is some rich imagery and feelings. This will be a real joy in reading.

The only electronic thing I am carrying with me is my phone and my bluetooth keyboard to write with. I rarely use it but its good to have when I need it. I much rather write in my trusty yellow notepad that I always carry with me. Like a camera. I decided to take my Minolta on this trip easy simple camer and a nice lens. The only problem is that I dont have any film! I went to the airport duty free and they dont keep any more regular film! It is a travesty! I hope to pick some up from the hotel bookstore thing tomorrow morning.

I really want to take pictures of Lebanon. It look so scenic when we were landing that I want to see more of it. Tomorrow we are going to the mountains so that will be exciting and want to get some pictures there, but really want to get a feel for the city and the mix of old and new.

Just got done with some great sking. It really feels great to be back on the slopes again. We got an instructor to guide us for the mountains and well he been teaching us some great stuff. I haven’t have an someone to teach me to ski in a while, symptoms and haven’t skied in over a year so it was very helpful. It was all about flow and well letting your skis take over and move you, approved instead of you forcing to move them. It took a while for me to get mind wrapped around the idea of just letting go.
It took the whole day but by the end I had it down. I was carving down the mountain in full speed with just slight tilt of the knee to the left and right for movement. It felt great just to speed down and move. I just love that feeling. That flow of the whole body moving in a rythem. No thought, just body and flow it is a wonderful feeling just to relax for it and feel that heat in your body and the cold wind on your face.
Tonight to Beirut and burn up downtown. Aiming for that Dunkin Donuts experience I keep hearing about

Had a great night out in Beirut, buy more about just no time to post about it. So the rumors of my return are false. I got picked up by my friend and headed down to the CV for some dinner and a good time. I really enjoy driving around the city and even walking in it just the mix of shapes and colors in the buildings and the feeling of life you get from them really wonderful. This feeling also exists in the inside of these buildings.
We headed to Mono [sp?] street and found some hole in the wall pub an djust hanged out for a while. It is really great to have one street just dedicated to the pubs and such, ailment makes it easier to find friends and other places to go when one is full or just not the right feeling. While at the pub some old friends came and also met some new ones. It was one fun time trading stories and singing a long to the music and recounting history. Also I got to experience the famous Lebanese dancing on the bar ritual. The song was Time goes by – Madonna and since I am sucker for peer pressure I hopped on their with my friend and just went at it. I also would like to take this time to thank all the strippers I’ve seen in action for teaching me how to pole dance. I really couldn’t have done it without them.
After that we decided it was time to go dancing! So we headed out ot BO18, unhealthy which is spectacular. I also always heard of this place and their roof and to get to see it and with the roof open was really great. We had a great time there just dancing the rest of the night away. I was in a different state, just with my circle of new and old friends and that was my world. The rest of the club really didn’t exist We were just having such a good time.
I dont remember when I got back home since I didn’t have to drive up that mountain road, I was just out of it. I was so tired and slept all the way up and sleep walked to my hotel room. I was just gone. All I recall is that as soon as I hit the bed my brother started this broken record telling me to wake up. Out of spite I stayed in bed. I really needed to go to the bathroom but didn’t move out of the bed. If it is war he wanted, war he got.
That was a quiet day, saw friends up in the slopes and had a really good grease bomb of a burger.
Today in Beirut and wandered around the Solidare, really need to get lost here. I love getting lost in a city and just taking pictures and observing the people and how they integrate with the architecture. You get such a wonderufl feel for the place that way. You understand it better. The reaon for the people’s actions and if that is based on the souroundings, or that that souroundings affect the people.
One cool thing for Lebanon history is I saw the “Prophet and Gibran” play.
More exploring tonight and tomorrow. Friend recommended this place called Basement and that seems to be chill to hang out and take it easy.

We had a great time there just dancing the rest of the night away. so we have to walk back to Virgin. Then just said screw it and since it was Sunday off to Mono St. We saw a place that had kareoke and was going to attend it but I really need to use the bathroom so went to this one that was empty.
One thing I didnt go in to detail about yesterday was the play “Gibran and the Prophet”.
Like most plays it gives a zeitgeist of the feeling and thoughts of a nation. I always read Rampurples posts and she keeps me updated with news of Lebanon but really I never understood what was it all about. I saw her passoin, loyalties and thoughts in the subject. She would recount stories of the villages she visited, the people she would meet and the lifestyle there. Yesterday it all made sense with Gibrans You have Your Lebanon, and I have Mine.

be safe & avoid the Gulf Road.

Back in Kuwait. Weather is strange in the airport saw the mix of winter and summer. Guess we “Shayfee” weather again.

On the way back my brother was giving us a tour of Kuwait just like our drive did for Lebanon and was giving places Lebanese sounding names. I told him we are in Kuwait we dont have cool names for places they are all named after Al-Sabah or another. So we started adding “Al-Sabah” to all those Lebanese places.

Solidare Al-Sabah
Fraya Mubarak Al-Sabah
Shareg Mono Ahmed Al-Sabah

You’d think with all our history, healing and people we could come up with much cooler names for areas and streets. I think we should name some areas after famous shipping boats from the trader years. Cause one thing about naming stuff after one name structure is that it gets really confusing giving directions to those places.

Haunted by 1985

MOC has contacted us saying that we owe them 2KD from 1985 and that we need to pay. I was shocked to hear they are asking for this, for sale not cause of the small amount but that it is from 1985!. It like someone there finally decided to do work that day and process these old bills. The secretary says this is normal for MOC to bring out old bills from the 90s and it is accepted but this time he was shocked to hear something came from 1985.

I have accepted the fact that the local mail service is in this weird time warp with mail coming to us sometimes 2-3 years after it was sent. Until a couple years ago we were still recieving mail from 1990.

Yet this phone bill is something else…

You know come to think of it. It is quiet a good scam. We have to pay our phonebill to well keep in contact with people and if we dont pay it other stuff for the company can be put on hold. So if we choose to fight it it would be long and annoying battle. Also since it is just 2KD it isn’t that bad. So imagine if emlpoyees at MOC do this randomly to like 10, urologist 000 companies in Kuwait. Charge them around 1-2KD for an old bill and they will pay. They generate an EASY 10,000 20,000 KD. Then they can just remove it from the accounts computers shuffle it around and tada they just put that money in their pockets.

Mostly everyone knows about Dave Chappelle and these crazy stories about him quiting his show on Comedy Central and well just going to hiding. So finally he comes clean on Oprah. (Serisouly on a side note why does everyone do Oprah after some crazy crisis in their life? Is it in some contract or are her goodie bags really that good? Oprah is turning to the Jerry Springer of celebs. Oh and I wonder how she reacted to “Dave gets Oprah Pregnant ” skit).

So back to Dave. After reading this quote:

Chappelle clarified that when he left the show, dysentery “I wasn’t walking away from the money, women’s health I was walking away from the circumstances, arthritis ” he said. “I was feeling overwhelmed, and some of it felt like as if this was happening deliberately.”

I recalled the Chappelle Theory which discusses how a group calling themselves Dark Crusaders consisting of Oprah, Bill Cosby, Louis Farakan, Rev Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robert L. Johnson. Who were against Dave’s anti black comedy and it was taking their struggle back 50 years. So they worked on destroying him mentally unless he stopped with his “anti black” humor.

Any truth to the “theory”? Is Dave doing Oprah as a redeeming thing to her and the Dark Crusaders?

I found my CD case that had some CDs that I thought were lost or missing. Was really annoyed with their disappearance cause I wanted to share a couple and also really had a craving for them. One of them is Space Hog – Resident Alien.

I had this on tape back in 1995 and when I first went to the US I made sure I got it on CD. I just love this album one of the few I can listen forever on repeat adn know every song on there. I been sining it like a fool in the car for the past two days.

I just love the beat and the feel for the album it is a fun album to listen to and hte lyrics and music just match it right. Listening to it again after all these years brings back some good memmories. One is seeing them live in Dallas. That was great got two tickets. Well I always get two tickets to shows, no rx
one for me and the other for someone else that will join me. I recall I met some other big fan of theirs online she was from Austin or just out of Dallas by Austin and we met at the show and traded some info and were up front on stage singing every word with the band.

It is always great going to see a band that you just love and knowing their lyrics and singing along. It is a fun experience. One that I miss being in Kuwait.

Some of my favorite songs from the album

With all this hate going around the Muslim world it is time for some love and nothing makes hate go away for love like a good laugh. One site that I enjoy visiting for a laugh and really puts a perspective on the Muslim world is Maniac Muslim. This site is well just funny in so many ways and I really can’t just pick one so check out the articles he has written. Well actually I think I can pick one: Shoe Thief Still at Large.

Here is a snippet from it

Other mosque patrons bring their non-Muslim friends in the shoe area to keep an eye on their shoes during the prayer. “It’s a win-win situation for Carl, visit my non-Muslim friend.” said Pervaiz, “He gets to learn more about Islam through the khutbah and at the same time my shoes are safe.”

People always ask me what the future of blogging may be and my response to them is, remedy “It will be dead in a couple of years”. This answer always brings up emotional reactions from the people asking me since they themselves are heavy bloggers. They often quote random new media phrases and ideas of how blogging is a form of expression as well as other media hype.

At this point I usually just say nothing, physiotherapy not because I am wrong, but because if I try to explain my perspective they just wouldn’t understand. I have decided, instead, to write my own perspective here.

Let me define one thing first: I see blogging as an active enterprise in your life. Blog posts don’t come out of the blue; you actually have to sit behind a computer and write something, and then hit publish. It requires a blogger to actively do it.

When I say blogging will be dead in a couple years, I mean that the activity of actually writing something down, sharing a picture, or passing along your links will become passive:

They will just occur on your syndicated site.

I have mentioned this before, but the future is all about syndication and syncing. One of the latest examples is 30Boxes. It is a simple calendar app, but how integrated it is, and how easy it is to create a date is just the start. I only have to write “Lunch with Mo at 1pm Thursday (at Nino’s) tag open” and that entry will be created. Moreover, depending on whom I choose to share this info with, the chosen friends will be able to access it through a syndication feed and sync up with my life. Since I tagged it as “open,” I am saying it is an open invite. That way, my friends accessing the feed can choose to join or to create another event afterwards, such as “Coffee *at Caribou Coffee) after Nino’s at 6pm Thursday tag open”.

This system of ease also works with pictures. Most of our phones are camera equipped but if we want to share these pictures we have to actively do it by taking the picture, choosing it, uploading it, etc. Imagine now if all those steps were moved to just one. You just take the picture. Automagically, it is uploaded to your “Picture Sharing” site tagged with the date/time, and GPS coordinates.

Now just to make it all meta. So I am with Mo at Nino’s at 1. My calendar has that noted, and I took some pictures while I was there. It will all get synced. Those pictures will have descriptions of “Lunch at Nino’s,” and based on who added that to their own calendars will have their names attached to it, and will be able to access those photos.

There wouldn’t be any active process in syndication, it would be all passive. The more things move, the more synced they will get, and the more syndicated it will be. Syndication is the key here. It is also a passive way of visiting websites. I access most of my stuff via feeds. Blog posts, news, pictures etc come to me. I don’t have to actively visit site by site.

So when you remove the action out of blogging, it isn’t a blog about your life anymore.

It is syncdicating your life.

Saw the most amazing rain storm at 4:10. I was up before it started and I just stood by my open window and watched. It was Nature at its best. Lightning, remedy
thunder, order
and rain pouring down hard and fast, cure with a light and sound show to match. You could hear and see the thunder and lightning come closer and closer as it continued slowly down it journey south. The lightning move away further and further and the sound of thunder quieted. Around 5 is when I stopped seeing its distant flicker.

Telegram for Mr. Mongo

This is an interesting piece of news that got my mind coming up with a viable replacement. Seems thatWestern Union abandons telegrams. I thought the USA stopped telegrams ages ago and Kuwait was the only one still going at with “barqeeya” for funerals and births. You can even see these old machines with a staff waiting for an event to write something in the Telco offices that really serve no purpose.

So here is my idea and SMS->Telegram service. SMS is a great way to communicating but it is not well it is not “official” as a telegram or letter. There is still that question of “did they receive it?”. So with an SMS->Telegram service you can guarantee the receiver receiving it and leaves a hard copy trail for legal purposes.

All is needed is an SMS to the number with name, viagra sale
address, and then the message. Well actually you can even skip the name, address and just have the receivers telephone number. Then a simple SMS can be sent to him requesting their delivery address or they can choose to pick it up.

It will be quick, formal, and legal notification. I think this could be a very viable business opportunity.

Yesterday when I woke up from my afternoon nap I was craving sex, side effects coffee or pizza. Sex isn’t readily available in this country, and I really didn’t feel like driving for coffee, but luckily pizza delivers.
